Tucson, AZ – October 20, 2009 – Universal Avionics Systems Corporation is pleased to introduce its next generation datalink communications system, the UniLink® UL-800 and UL-801 Communications Management Unit (CMU). Featuring Future Air Navigation System (FANS) and VHF Data Link (VDL) Mode 2 capabilities, UL-800 and UL-801 enables digital high-speed datalink communication between the aircraft flight crew and air traffic control. UniLink UL-800 and UL-801 will be available in 2010. UniLink UL-800 and UL-801 supports several functionalities that enhance the efficiency and safety of flight by using satellite and VHF datalink technology to provide a simple communication interface for the flight crew and air traffic controller. Compliant with the standards set forth in FANS 1/A, UL-800 and UL-801 enables Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC), Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Contract (ADS-C) capabilities, departure clearances, flight management system flight plans, and textual/graphical weather reports that allow the operator to make informed decisions on routing that leads to fuel economies and shorter flight times. Operators will benefit from the UniLink’s Very High Frequency (VHF) data radio (VDR) that enables textbased Airline Operational Communication (AOC) / Airline Administrative Communication (AAC) and Flight Information Services (FIS) messages over the VDL Mode 2 network. Customers can select two configurations: UniLink UL-800 for use with the aircraft’s onboard VDR or UL-801 with an internal VDR. The VDL Mode 2 network, a high-speed and high-capacity digital communications network, provides 13 times the message capacity than today’s commonly used Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS). Use of VDL Mode 2 tends to be more cost efficient than ACARS as service providers encourage users to transition to the new network. UL-800 and UL-801 incorporates a new hardware platform provisioned to support higher-level Aeronautical Telecommunications Network (ATN) services and applications (such as advanced CPDLC) as they are implemented worldwide. Equipage mandates for ATN CPDLC begin as early as 2011 for operators in European airspace, under EUROCONTROL’s Link 2000+ Programme. As datalink technology becomes the predominant mode of air-to-ground communication, UL-800 and UL-801 offers a flexible growth path designed to accommodate the needs of business, transport, regional and government/military operators.
