Universal Avionics Announces FAA Approval for Horizon Air to Fly
PDX RNP .3 nm SAAAR Approaches

Tucson, Arizona – August 18, 2006 - Universal Avionics Systems Corporation today announced that Horizon Air was advised by the FAA that the Portland International (PDX) RNP 0.3 nm Special Aircraft and Aircrew Authorization Required (SAAAR) approaches have been approved for revenue service. This approval represents the second US Air Carrier to achieve RNP approach approval and the first and only RNP approach approval that allows for a DME/DME/DME/IRU based back-up to GPS. The new RNP approaches in Portland have been in operational service by Alaska Airlines for several months. Early reports from these flights have demonstrated reduced air traffic communications, reduced fuel consumption, and improved noise abatement. Horizon Air will now be able to achieve these same improvements.

“Since 1997, Horizon Air, has been flying with the Universal FMS and striving to increase our safety, efficiency and reliability with this powerful tool,” said Perry Solmonson, Manager Flight Operations Technical, Horizon Air. “I would like to personally thank Universal Avionics for the efforts and sacrifices it made to bring success to this program. This RNAV (RNP) approach approval marks a very exciting time in aviation and puts Universal in a rather distinguished position among avionics manufacturers”.

Horizon Air operates 48 aircraft equipped with dual Universal Avionics Flight Management Systems.
